How to configure pallet racking systems?
Pallet rack systems are constructed using pallets depending on the vertical height of the available space along with the safety codes that are attached with it. Once you have selected the pallet racking systems for your warehouse that are on your budget, available space on facility and workforce, it is time to install them. Here are three simple pallet racking system configuration steps to help you set up your own pallet rack system:
Measure and size the product
- Measure the pallets: Begin the process by measuring the height, width and depth of your pallets. You may also want to leave a little space in between the pallets to give yourself a way when loading or unloading the rack. Make sure to note the correct measurements as the rest of the step will depend on these figures. You will also need to determine the heaviest load weight that you will be storing on the pallet.
Beam and upright sizes
- Shelf width: Based on the previous measurements, determine how wide your shelves have to be. For example: If you are storing 80” of load on a shelf which is based on two pallets per shelf with width 4” on each side of the pallet then you will require a 96” beam.
- Beam capacity: After the width has been established for the shelves, you will now need to select the correct beams for your load. Each shelf will need two beams.
- Upright height and depth: Use your pallet rack height to determine the required upright height. You will need to remember both load and total shelf capacities when selecting the correct beam. Upright depth is going to be based on the depth of the pallets. The whole pallet load must be balanced on the front and back of the beams.
Add it up
- Determine quantities: Determine the total number of uprights and beams that you’ll need for your storage system following pallet racking guidelines. You can also use one upright as a connector for various bays of rack. And two racks can also share a center upright if total shelf and upright capacities are within the range.
Benefits of pallet racking configuration.
When configuring your current pallet rack design and layout or investing on a new pallet rack system you will need to correctly measure and configure to set up. Pallet rack systems leverage the vertical space of your warehouse facility which allows you to store more products and materials without having to expand your horizontal footprint. Here are some of the benefits that you’ll get from correctly configuring the pallet racking:
- Maximizes storage space utilization by taking the proper advantage of vertical space.
- Helps prevent damage to products as well as pallets.
- Pallet racking software can also help you keep track of the products and inventory.
- Simplicity for both stock and inventory control.
- Optimization of loading and unloading time period.
- Quick and easy retrieval of pallets.
- Proper configuration of pallet racks will help you keep organized and save cost.
